Quiet please! "Q" is shy.

Theme:  Letter Q
Since I was sick we did a quick overview of letter Q.  We learned that Q is shy and quiet and so he always takes along his friend, U.  We read several Q words and noticed brave U came right after the Q.  We practiced writing Q.  We noticed that lowercase p & q are similar.  We made Q with our bodies.  We also practiced making the Q sound.  We had fun asking Questions in class.

Choosing Time:  Spelling Q words, Little People Town with Queens,...

Question of the Week:
  • Do you like to be Quiet?  I love that ALL the kids had a hard time with this one...they all ended up putting their magnets on the line that divides Yes and No to show that they Sometimes like to be quiet.  This lead to a great discussion about when it is a good time to be quiet and when it is a good time to be loud.

Books:
The Queen Couldn't Sleep

Snack:
  • Cheese & "Quackers"
Music & Movement:
  • Q movements (wave like a Queen, throw like a quarterback, quack like a duck...)
  • I Like Q
  • 5 Little Ducks
Art:
  • Q Quilts--This was great for scissor practice.  First the kiddos had to identify which pictures make the Q sound and then they had to cut only those out.  Gluing is always fun and then coloring the quilt squares was the perfect way to demonstrate individual tastes.
Games:
  • Quarter Toss
  • Quilt, Quilt, Who's under the Quilt?

"P" is Popular

Theme:  Letter "P"
One may think that the letter "P" is obsolete and it certainly isn't one of the favorite letters chosen on The Wheel of Fortune, but perhaps it is used more often than we give it credit for.  There are so many fun options for this week that I wish I could carry it on for another 2 weeks :)  There are pirates, poetry, princes, princesses, parrots, porcupines, pigs, pheasants, peacocks, peas, peaches, plums, pears, peanut butter, parties, pajamas, pancakes, pudding,...and I could go on an fill a whole page with more nouns and adjectives.  So, since we don't have three weeks, we focused on pigs, pancakes, porcupines, pirates, painting, and princesses.  We tried to talk about princes, but the boys shied away from that?

Choosing Time:  Penguin Color by Number Pages (with colored Pencils), Pokemon, Play-dough, Pirate Puppets, Ponies, Pegboards, Puzzles, Dig for P's, Potato Head

Questions of the Week:
  1. Have you touched a pig?
  2. Do you like pancakes?
  3. Have you seen a live penguin?  (One of my cuties said, "Well, I saw one on TV and that counts, cause TV is real!")  I'm still smiling.
Science:  We learned about Porcupines.  We watched a short clip titled "Lion vs. Porcupine."  Have your kiddos tell you who won and why.

O, Ow, & OO

Theme:  Letter "O"
This week we focused on the two "O" sounds (as in ocean & octopus) and then also the sounds made when "O" is paired with another "O" (like boo) or a "W" (like in owl).  We had fun writing O's and noticed that it is hard to see where an "O" starts and where it ends.  We understood that O's make good wheels.  We made "O's" with our arms, hands, bodies, and some tried to make them with their feet :)  We saw lots of great somersaults (O's).

Choosing Time:  Shells, Octagon Builing Shapes, Ocean Animals, Water Sensory with "octopus" legs and other ocean items

Show & Tell:  Some great "O" things included owls, orange things, wheels,...

Snacks:
  • "O" shaped cookies & Orange carrots
  • Oreos & Apple Slices
  • "O" shaped cereal, Orange fish crackers, & Oranges
Music & Movement:
  • Hi, My Name Is O
  • Swim with Henry (the octopus)
  • 5 Little Octupuses
  • Letter "O"
Science:  I gave the kiddos oreos to eat.  Then we looked at our teeth in a mirror.  We noticed how the chocolate stuck to our teeth.  I then gave each kiddo an apple slice.  After eating the apple we looked at our teeth again.  The apple helped to "clean" our teeth.

Art:
  • An Ocean Scene
  • Crayon Resist Watercolor
  • Valentine Owls (really owls, not penguins...)
Questions of the Week:
  • Do you like the ocean?
  • Do you like Oreos?
